No. The file is read straight from your disk and decoded by a WebAssembly build of FFmpeg running inside the tab. You can check it yourself: open DevTools, switch to the Network panel and extract a track — nothing leaves the page. The tool works on videos that are already on your device; there is no address field, so nothing is fetched from the web either.

MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV, AVI, MPEG, TS, 3GP, FLV, WMV and most other containers FFmpeg can read. MP4 to MP3 and MOV to MP3 (iPhone recordings) are the two most common jobs here; WebM to MP3 from a screen recording, and video to WAV for editing, work just as well.

Up to 500 MB per file and 10 files in the queue. They run strictly one after another and the browser's working memory is cleared between them, so a long batch does not pile up until the tab gives out. Anything over the limit is refused with a clear message instead of crashing.

Only as much as the format you pick. MP3 at 192 kbps is clean enough for speech and most music, 320 kbps leaves almost nothing on the table, 128 kbps roughly halves the file. WAV writes uncompressed 16-bit PCM, exactly what editing software wants, at around 10 MB per minute. The ceiling is always the video's own track — extracting cannot add detail that was never recorded.

Most MP4 and MOV files already carry an AAC track, and an M4A is the same container with the picture removed. When we detect AAC, those bytes are copied across untouched instead of being decoded and re-encoded: the result is identical to the original track and it finishes in a moment, whatever the file size. If the source uses another codec, the track is re-encoded to AAC at the bitrate you chose.

Some recordings genuinely have no sound: screen captures made without system audio, timelapses, action-camera and drone clips shot in a silent mode, or a video that was muted during export. The file is inspected before conversion, and when there is no audio stream we say so instead of handing you an empty file no player can open.

Yes, in any modern mobile browser. Be a little modest with it though: phones have less memory than laptops, so one or two clips at a time is safer than a full queue of 500 MB files, and keep the tab in the foreground while it works.
