Two taps produce a first number, four make it usable and eight make it steady. The tool averages the last eight intervals by default, which is the sweet spot between reacting to a tempo change and ignoring your own wobble. If you are checking a track that speeds up, switch the window to four; for a long, even groove, sixteen gives the calmest number.

Because two taps are a single interval, and one shaky interval is the whole measurement. Every extra tap adds another interval to the average, so the number settles as you go. It also rejects outliers: a tap you miss or an accidental double tap is thrown out instead of halving or doubling the reading, and the panel tells you when that happened.

Both, technically. Tempo is ambiguous by an octave: a drum and bass track is 174 BPM but you can just as easily tap 87. The half-time and double-time values are shown next to the main reading for that reason. Pick the one that matches how the track is counted in the genre you work in, or start the metronome and listen to which one sits on the snare.

It is accurate to roughly a beat per minute once you have tapped a while, which is plenty for setting a delay or matching a loop. It will not be exact to two decimals, because your own timing is not. When you need that, and you have the file, use the file-based BPM finder at /tools/bpm-finder, which reads the waveform instead of your hand. Tapping wins whenever the sound is not a file you own: live music, a video, a radio, a memory.

It converts the tempo into milliseconds for every common note value, straight, dotted and triplet, which is what a delay pedal, a tremolo rate or a reverb pre-delay actually wants.
