Tempo detection is dependable for music with a steady beat — house, pop, hip-hop, rock. Rubato playing, orchestral music, ambient and anything that changes tempo part-way through are much harder, and the number is an average at best. Half-time and double-time are always shown, because for a lot of tracks both readings are defensible.

How it works: a spectral-flux onset envelope and autocorrelation give the tempo; a chromagram matched against the Krumhansl–Schmuckler key profiles gives the key. Both run in this tab.

How to Find the BPM of a Song

Three steps, all inside your browser

  1. Add your tracks

    Drag in up to ten MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG or FLAC files, 200 MB each. They are read straight off your disk — nothing is uploaded.

  2. Read the tempo

    The BPM appears to one decimal place with a confidence rating, and the half-time and double-time readings sit right beside it for the tracks where both are defensible.

Yes. No signup, no credit card, no daily quota and no watermark. The analysis runs on your own processor, so there is no server bill for us to pass on to you.
No. The file is read straight from your disk and decoded by the browser's own audio engine. You can prove it: open DevTools, switch to the Network panel, then analyse a track — you will not see your file being sent anywhere. Turning off your Wi-Fi after the page loads works just as well.
MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG, Opus and FLAC, plus the audio track of an MP4 or WebM. Whatever your browser can play, this can analyse — Safari and Chrome differ slightly on exotic codecs, and an unreadable file says so instead of failing silently.
Up to 200 MB per file. Tempo is measured from the first two minutes, and for anything longer than four minutes a minute from the middle is added, so a DJ mix or a live set is not judged on its intro alone. That keeps a two-hour file as fast as a three-minute one.
On our own synthetic test set — metronome click tracks generated inside the unit tests at 90, 120, 128 and 174 BPM — it returns the exact tempo to within 0.1 BPM. That measures the maths, not real music. In practice the reading is dependable for anything with a steady beat and much less so for rubato playing, orchestral music, ambient, and tracks that change tempo part-way through.
Because the tempo octave is genuinely ambiguous. A drum-and-bass track is 174 BPM to a DJ and 87 to a dancer; a slow hip-hop beat is 85 or 170 depending on whether you count the hi-hats. The tool picks the reading that fits the music best and shows the other two so you can take the one your project needs.
Up to ten files per run, processed one after another so the tab never holds two decoded tracks at the same time. The results table gives you file name, BPM, key, Camelot code and confidence, and exports as a CSV with a UTF-8 marker so Excel does not mangle non-English track titles.
Yes, in any modern mobile browser. A three-minute track takes a couple of seconds on a recent phone. Very large files are the limit rather than the tool: a phone has less memory than a laptop, so a 200 MB FLAC may be too much for an older device.
