No. The file is read from your disk with the browser's File API and re-encoded with WebCodecs on your own machine. If you want to check, open DevTools, switch to the Network tab and compress a clip: you will not see a single request carrying your video.

Yes, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise. Compression is a re-encode: the video is decoded and encoded again at a lower bitrate, so fine detail and fast motion take a hit. Balanced is chosen to be the point where most people cannot see it on a phone screen; High keeps more and saves less. Your device's hardware encoder does the work through WebCodecs, which is why it takes seconds rather than minutes.

Switch to "Target size", tap 25 MB (or 20 MB for Discord), and the tool solves for the bitrate that lands there, minus a little headroom for the container. If the clip is long enough that hitting the number would mean unwatchable video, it says so instead of quietly failing — lower the resolution to 720p or 480p and try again.

20 MB on a free account since August 2026 — it used to be 10 MB, and 25 MB before that, which is why so many guides still quote the wrong number. Nitro Basic raises it to 50 MB and full Nitro to 500 MB. The 20 MB preset here aims a little under the cap on purpose: Discord counts the whole file, and a few kilobytes of container overhead is enough to get an upload bounced.

Because it was already compressed hard. A clip exported by TikTok, a screen recorder or another compressor has little slack left, and we never encode above the source bitrate — inflating a file to "reach" a target would be worse than useless. When that happens, the real wins come from resolution and frame rate: 1080p to 720p alone removes more than half the pixels.

One video at a time, on purpose: decoding and encoding are memory-hungry, and a browser tab running a batch is the fastest way to crash it. When one is done, press "Compress another".
