Photo to Painting FAQ

Choosing a style, keeping a likeness, printing and cost.

Impressionist (the default) uses loose brushwork and soft light, which suits landscapes, gardens and outdoor portraits. Realistic keeps accurate proportions with refined brushwork, the safest choice when the face must look like the person. Expressionist exaggerates color and form for drama. Abstract turns the photo into bold shapes and color, and most of the likeness is lost.
Not directly. The template offers four broad styles rather than named artists. Impressionist comes closest to the light, airy feel people associate with Monet, and Expressionist leans toward the bold, intense brushwork of painters like Munch. For one particular artist's look you would need a different tool.
Pet portraits are one of the most popular uses. Use a sharp photo taken at the animal's eye level in good light. Choose Realistic if you want every marking preserved, or Impressionist for a softer, more painterly look. Fur turns into visible brushstrokes, which looks especially good once printed.
The images made from your photos are yours to print. Small and medium prints work as they are. For a large canvas, upscale the result first so the brushstrokes stay crisp, and order a square canvas, because the output is square and anything else would crop it.
With Realistic and Impressionist, faces usually stay recognizable because the composition and proportions are kept. Expressionist distorts features on purpose, and Abstract often drops the likeness entirely. For portraits, start with a well-lit, front-facing photo where the face fills a good part of the frame.
