Not here. The encoded frames are copied from your file into the new one exactly as they are — no decoding, no re-encoding, no change to the resolution, the frame rate or the bitrate. What you download is the same picture in a new container with the audio track left out. Most online muters re-encode the video, which costs you a generation of quality for a job that should not touch the picture at all.

Because the work is a file rewrite, not a render. Removing a track means reading the video packets and writing them back out, which runs at disk speed — a two-minute clip is typically done before you have finished reading this sentence. Tools that re-encode have to decode every frame and compress it again, which is where the minutes go.

MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV and AVI carrying H.264, HEVC, VP8, VP9 or AV1. H.264 and HEVC clips come back as MP4; VP8 and VP9 clips stay WebM, because moving them into MP4 would leave you with a file half the players on your machine refuse to open.

This page only removes the track outright — that is what makes it instant. No. The file is read from your disk and rewritten in the page. Open DevTools, watch the Network tab while you mute a clip, and you will see no request carrying it. Nothing leaves the device, which matters when the reason you are muting is a conversation you would rather not send to a stranger's server.

Up to 2 GB. Because nothing is decoded, length is far less of a problem than it is for tools that re-encode — a long recording mostly costs the time it takes to read and write the bytes. Very large files on a phone can still run the tab out of memory, so a laptop is the safer choice past a few hundred megabytes.
