No. The file is read from your disk with the browser's File API and decoded by the same video engine that plays it back. If you want to check, open DevTools, switch to the Network tab and extract a frame: you will not see a single request carrying your video.

Anything your browser can play: MP4 and MOV (H.264, and HEVC on most Macs and iPhones), WebM (VP8, VP9, AV1), and MKV or AVI when the codec inside is one of those. If the video plays in your browser, frames can be read out of it.

Because a JPEG re-encode throws away exactly the detail people came for. A single video frame is already a compressed picture; saving it as JPEG compresses it a second time and puts blocking around text, hair and smooth gradients. PNG is lossless — what you get is bit-for-bit what the decoder produced. JPG and WebP are one click away when you need a smaller file.

Exactly the video's own. A 4K clip gives 3840×2160 images, a vertical phone clip comes out vertical with the rotation already applied. Nothing is scaled down, cropped or letterboxed.

Yes. Choose "every N seconds" or "N frames, evenly spaced", and the tool shows you exactly how many images that will be before it starts. One run is capped at 300 frames, because every frame is a full-resolution image held in the tab. Download them individually or as a single zip.

Up to 2 GB. Above roughly 500 MB the tool warns you first: nothing gets uploaded, but jumping around a huge file makes the browser read a lot from disk, and that is slow on phones and on spinning drives. Frame extraction itself stays cheap no matter how long the clip is.

A browser never tells a web page the frame rate of a video, so the tool assumes 30 fps until it can measure it. Press play for a second and it reads the real rate off the decoder — or just type the correct value into the frames-per-second box. Dragging the timeline and grabbing a frame works correctly either way.
