No. The file is read straight from your disk and converted by a WebAssembly build of FFmpeg running inside the tab. You can verify it: open DevTools, switch to the Network panel and convert a video — you will not see your file being sent anywhere.

MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV, AVI, MPEG, 3GP and most other containers FFmpeg can decode. MP4 to GIF and MOV to GIF (iPhone recordings) are the two most common jobs here, and WebM to GIF from screen recordings works just as well.

Up to 200 MB. The single-threaded WebAssembly engine has to hold the file in memory, so anything bigger is refused with a clear message instead of crashing the tab. If your file is over the limit, trim or compress it first — you only need the seconds that end up in the GIF.

The first run downloads the FFmpeg engine, about 31 MB, and your browser caches it. Every conversion after that starts immediately. Speed then depends on your own CPU: a few seconds of 480 px video usually takes a few seconds, a long 640 px clip takes longer.

GIF is an old format: at most 256 colours per frame and no motion compression between frames, so every frame is stored almost in full while MP4 stores only what changed. Three levers control the size — width, frame rate and length. Halving the width roughly quarters the file; 10 fps instead of 20 halves it; five seconds instead of ten halves it again. The Small preset drops the palette to 64 colours for a further cut.

One video at a time, on purpose. The engine keeps the whole file in browser memory, and running several 200 MB jobs in parallel would push most tabs over their memory limit. When a GIF is done, just click "Make another" and load the next clip.

Yes, in any modern mobile browser, but stay modest: pick a short clip, 320-480 px width and 10-12 fps. Phones have less memory than laptops, and a 200 MB source with a 30-second selection can be too much for older devices.
